Now that we’ve reached the final 4, the reality is only Pete and Kris have a chance to win. Others can improve (or worsen) their position, but not win the coveted title. Chris and Rock are sadly kaput.

Here are the scenarios:

• If Gonzaga wins the tournament, Kris wins.
• If Oregon beats Gonzaga in final, Kris wins.
• If Oregon beats SC in the final, Pete wins.
• If UNC wins the tournament, Pete wins.
• If SC wins the tournament, Pete wins.

Although we have reached the final 4, I thought I would first post the results after the Elite 8, when some folks still had a chance.

With 8 teams left, Pete was in the driver’s seat with both the lead and the most teams remaining. Chris, Kris and Zane were all in decent shape, having 3 teams remaining each.

First of all, apologies for the use of the term “pretenders” last week. Clearly, it was meant to read “contenders”, for as of round 2, the competition has certainly tightened.

While Mike technically still has a share of the lead, he can no longer be viewed as the frontrunner given that he only has 4 teams left (and his alma matter scored a pathetic 39 points in their second round loss).

Next update on Friday when we reach the elite 8.

First, here is how the point system works:

• Round 1:  10 points per win
• Round 2:  20 points per win
• Round 3:  30 points per win
• Round 4:  40 points per win
• Round 5:  60 points per win
• Round 6:  100 points per win

As for the results after round 1, Mike has surged to a surmountable lead over the usual collection of pretenders (minus Kendall).
